TT USA: The Inauguration, social teachers and slang words

24 January 2025

Hey Tappsters!

Welcome to the USA Teacher Tapp blog πŸŽ‰ Week FIFTHTEEN of tapping! Welcome to all who joined this week!

Share the app with your colleagues and help grow the community. The best link to spread the word is onelink.to/teachertapp – it takes them straight to the app store! πŸ“²βœ¨

Now let’s get into the data…

1. The Inauguration

This week schools closed for the day as President Trump was inaugurated into the White House. But how many teachers watched it happen? And what do they think about the changes ahead in education?

πŸ“Ί πŸ’» Just over a third watched the inauguration (34%) with the majority of those teachers taking the time to watch it live.

πŸ“ˆ What difference will the new president make to schools and education? Feelings are mostly negative, with 65% believing things will worsen and 28% expecting no difference. Just 13% of teachers think things will improve under the new president.

However, despite these strong feelings, that appears to be very little overspill into the classroom when it comes to conversations with students.

A huge 70% have NEVER discussed the new President with their pupils. Just 28% have had ‘occasional’ discussions and a tiny 2% have spoken about President Trump ‘extensively’.

2. How social are teachers?

When the school bell rings on Friday where are you headed? Is it time to socialise, or just home to sink into the couch and binge on something trashy?

For more than a half of teachers (53%) socialising on a Friday with colleagues is something they do ‘very infrequently‘ or just ‘sometimes‘, and 28% haven’t made it happen so far this year.

Just 2% spend time socialising with their work colleagues every week.

How do American teachers compare to the rest of the world?

It seems that this level of socialisation is pretty typical for teachers; results are similar to England, where just 4% say they socialise with colleagues every week.

As yet, this isn’t a question teachers in The Netherlands or Belgium have answered – but it is one that will be asked soon, and so look out for the results in the blog!

🌎 Do you have a question that you would like asked to teachers in England, USA, Belgian and the Netherlands? If so – let us know and we can add it to the app!

3. Top slang words

Yo yo yo! Wassgwarnin TT fam!

Slang and students using slang words is not new behaviour. After all, I’m sure all teachers can think back to their own school days and recall slang words from their youth (my own heavily featured saying things were “grim” and calling my sister a “minger”).

Fast forward to 2025, and which words are currently in favour?

The MOST heard slang words last week were…

1️⃣ ‘Bruh’ takes the top spot (33%).

2️⃣ With ‘sigma’ sliding in second (18%).

3️⃣ Third place was ‘crash out’ (13%).

4️⃣ Joint entry! Fourth was a tie between ‘low key’ and ‘rizz’ (7%).

5️⃣ And in fifth place ‘ate’ (4%).
