TT USA - 3 Key findings: teacher reflection, Social Emotional Learning and our first 100 Tappers

Welcome to the USA Teacher Tapper blog ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐ŸŽ‰! This is our third blog, and weโ€™re thrilled to hear about your school experiences on Teacher Tapp.

Our mission to reach the first 150 teachers is progressing! Our team visited the USA last week at ResearchEd Delaware. It was great to meet so many new Tappers and hear some great question suggestions for the app.

Right, now on to this week’s round-up of some useful edu-data insights…

1. How far would you commute for your dream job?

Scouring job ads, you spot the perfect role. Salary, school, subject – it’s ticking all the boxes…and then you put in your journey time and suddenly it’s not so perfect.

For some people, a long commute isn’t a big deal: 21% would consider a role at a school more than 45 minutes away. For others 42%, anything over 30 minutes is off the table, and 12% wouldn’t travel more than 15 minutes.

England vs USA comparisons

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ฅ๓ ฎ๓ ง๓ ฟ How does the USA compare to England? Far more USA Tappers say ‘up to 15 minutes’ is their maximum commute time for an ideal job (12% vs 3%). However – for everything else, the two countries were very similar!

England vs USA:

33% vs 30% 15-30 minutes;

42% vs 37% 30-45 minutes;

BOTH 19% 45-1 hour;

BOTH 2% 1 hour plus.

As more Tappers join the app, questions like this can be broken down by job role. Are admins more open to long commutes? Or it might be classroom teachers who are the most likely to travel for longer if it was a ‘dream job’?

2. Social Emotional Learning

In 2003, Illinois became the first state to adopt K-12 SEL standards (you can read more on CASEL) – but how widespread is the practice now?

43% of you work in a state using SEL standards, 20% do not, and a significant 37% do not know.

Districts using an SEL curriculum appear to be more common: 56% of Tappers work in a district with an SEL curriculum, 26% do not, and 20% do not know.

Opinions on whether or not SEL should be integrated into the school day vary.

48% want it fully integrated into ALL subjects, and 18% into some subjects.

11% want it taught separately, and 2% just via extra curricular classes.

However, 21% do not want it taught at all.

3. Bathroom breaks

Finding time to get to the bathroom can be a challenge in schools; the busy day plus a lack of access is a bad combination.

Although we only have small numbers on the panel at the moment, there seems to be a split between the experiences of male and female teachers. Female teachers are more likely to say they agree that it is a struggle to visit the bathroom (71% vs 41%).

There are a lot of obvious biological reasons for this finding – however, the difference in experience raises a question about what can be done to improve things for female staff? Could admins make adjustments to ensure bathroom breaks are more easily facilitated?
